GUINEA-BISSAU: Hospital Births on Rise
December 17th, 2009 | IRIN
More women in Guinea-Bissau are choosing to give birth in hospitals, instead of using traditional birthing attendants. According to the UN Population Fund, 38 percent of women in Guinea-Bissau gave birth in a hospital in 2009, up from 29 percent in 2003. Doctors and aid officials are hopeful that this trend will bring down the maternal death rate in the area.
