Roche has partnered with the EMPOWER programme, a project in Kenya which seeks to overcome system challenges such as lack of screening and diagnostic capabilities, through to accessing medicines, by establishing clinics that provide integrated care for breast and cervical cancer.

19 EMPOWER clinics have been launched across Kenya (12 launched during the COVID-19 pandemic) to increase community awareness of breast and cervical cancer, and other non-communicable diseases, strengthening capacity to deliver integrated women cancer screening services and early detection within county health clinics.

Results and milestones

Since it first launched in 2019, 19 clinics have been established across Kenya, with more than 42,000 women screened (bc, HPV).

Men who accompanied the women were also educated about cancer and over 4,000 men have been screened for prostate cancer.

All those diagnosed with cancers were linked to existing cancer care delivery systems and continuous support was offered through the strengthened healthcare systems.

Prostate cancer screening was also added as a core service, as more men turned up for screening. In addition, an integrated approach was also developed in non-communicable disease care, particularly in diabetes and hypertension screening; with 17,001 patients screened to date.
