Expanding Mental Health Care, Infrastructure, and Sustainability within AMPATH’s Population Health Model

AMPATH will help expand access to mental health and substance abuse services for more than 200,000 youth, adolescents and adults in western Kenya.

Objectives

Goal 1: To increase access to and quality of mental health disease prevention and care for adolescents and youth in Kenya

  • Objective 1.1: Provide awareness and sensitization for adolescent and youth mental health and substance use disorders
  • Objective 1.2: Partner with schools and existing Kenyan youth organizations to build capacity within these institutions to prevent, identify, and treat adolescent and youth mental illness and substance use
  • Objective 1.3: Improve the quality and availability of clinic-based care for adolescent and youth mental health and substance use care

Goal 2: To empower patients with mental health disorders to lead productive and independent lives through expanding livelihood support and sustainability of the MTRH Nawiri Recovery and Skills Centre

  • Objective 2.1: Assess and improve the effectiveness of Nawiri Illness Management and Recovery Services
  • Objective 2.2: Expand livelihood and skills development programs for residential and day-service patients at the MTRH Nawiri Recovery and Skills Centre
  • Objective 2.3: Promote financial sustainability for the MTRH Nawiri Recovery and Skills Centre within local health financing models

Goal 3: To scale and implement sustainability models for community substance use groups in western Kenya

  • Objective 3.1: Define and implement scaling and sustainability pathways for community substance use groups within Kenyan government units and community organizations
  • Objective 3.2: Support livelihood and microfinance programs within community-substance use groups

The Foundation awarded AMPATH with a  grant which will help expand access to mental health and substance abuse services for more than 200,000 youth, adolescents and adults in western Kenya. This is the second grant the Foundation has provided to AMPATH through the Indiana University Center for Global Health .
