Sustainability Social  is an initiative which enables innovative solutions to complex healthcare challenges, leveraging social entrepreneurial solutions to create a healthier world for individuals, animals and their communities . It implements concrete interventions for social change from community collaboration, over grantmaking to impact investment investments.

An example is the long term  collaboration between Ashoka and Boehringer Ingelheim which aims to create a healthier world for individuals, animals and their communities by supporting social entrepreneurs (links here and here).

  • South Africa: Development of a digitally controlled locker system that dispenses medication to patients in clinics. It significantly cuts down waiting time (from 3-5 hours to 37 seconds per collection) and also provides data for the clinics to monitor adherence and non-collections so that they are able to minimize the wastage of drugs (link).
  • Egypt: Creation of hubs to collect excess medicine, sending it through an intensive sorting process, filtering and then distributing it to those who need it through various distribution channels. This system has benefited more than 1,000 patients per month and saves the community, pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies an estimated 50,000 USD annually through recycling unused medicine (link).
  • Senegal: Development of a virtual community pharmacy to optimize drug use and access in rural areas, allowing each individual to register (for free) as a member who can make deposits, withdrawals, loans and purchases of medicines (link).
