Objectives
  • Support the specialist training of 7 oncology fellows from Rwanda in the period 2024-26.
  • Strengthen the Oncology Fellowship Training programme through increasing the capacity for short-period international externships, plus visiting lectureships to enhance education in Rwanda.

As of 2023 there are five hospitals in Rwanda providing cancer services through a combined total of 10 oncologists, 22 pathologists and 19 radiologists, with cancer surgery performed by 6 general surgeons working at the teaching hospitals, and 10 urologists. This project is to support the University of Rwanda deliver specialist training for additional medical, surgical and urological oncologists, plus an interventional radiologist focused on oncological practice. Matched-funding is provided by the Rwanda Ministry of Health.

Support provided will contribute to the training costs in Rwanda, and open the opportunity for fellows in training to undertake externship periods at international centers of excellence. In addition, it allows overseas faculty to travel to Rwanda to support the in-service training of both medical oncologists and interventional radiologists. This address the expertise gap within the country in the period 2024-25– which will be closed once specialists supported by this programme complete their training in 2025 and enter public service, becoming the trainers for the next generation of specialists.
