Called “the face of poverty”, noma is a gangrenous condition that begins as a benign lesion of the mouth, then quickly destroys a part of the face. This disease occurs in a context of extreme poverty, malnutrition and health problems. In August 2019, three nurses, the administrative manager, an animator and the cook of the NGO Sentinelles in Burkina Faso were trained by a member of the PhysioNoma organization, in order to better understand the after-effects of noma, conduct a physiotherapeutic assessment and offer rehabilitation. During this mission a dozen patients were able to benefit from these new skills.

Results and milestones
  • Three nurses, the administrative manager, an animator and the cook of the NGO Sentinelles in Burkina Faso received training to better care for NOMA patients
  • A dozen of patients benefitted from this improved care
